We met November 2006 in New Orleans, while we were both graduate students at Tulane (David was in Medical School and Marstal was at the School of Public Health). We got to know one and other better over the next few months during many study hours in the library and delicious meals at many of the city’s unique restaurants. The adventure continued, as we shared our love of delta blues on a roadtrip to Memphis, one Hurricane evacuation, an epic road trip up the California Pacific Coast Highway, and countless memorable Big Easy moments during Jazz Fest, Mardi Gras, and French Quarter Fest.
In late January 2011, we planned a long weekend exploring wineries in Paso Robles,CA, intending to camp on the cliffs of Big Sur. Mother Nature had other plans however and David had to scramble to explain why we should visit the beach in the rain…. “we need to walk Teak (our chocolate Labrador daughter),” he stated. While Teak investigated the rocky shoreline, David asked Marstal to marry him and continue our adventure in Minnesota. Marstal, of course, said yes.
